Craftsman: Hsu Chen-chun “Embroidery” is a refined craft steeped in Eastern culture; in Chinese tradition it was long regarded as an essential feminine art. Master Hsu Chen-chun has been creating for more than sixty years. Under her father’s tutelage she mastered many traditional crafts, and, enthralled by embroidery, taught herself to stitch flowers, bind three-inch lotus shoes, and twist spring blossoms. She even developed her own “three-dimensional embroidery,” turning flat traditional surfaces into lively, sculptural forms and transforming the technique into a new handicraft pedagogy and refined industry. Whether the planar embroidery she excelled at since childhood or the self-invented 3-D style, her work is singular and inventive, earning her the title “First Embroiderer of Lukang.” Here you can see the “dudou” worn by ancient beauties that once dazzled audiences at national folk-art events, lifelike “tiger pillows” that accompany children to sleep, and all manner of sachets worn at the Dragon-Boat Festival—pieces steeped in nostalgic charm yet fresh with modern sensibility, well worth lingering over.
