新竹縣竹北市犁頭山下39號
In 1877, the magistrate of Zhuqian County, Li Shenyun, passed by the present site of the Lotus Temple and was deeply impressed by the majestic view of the 18 Sharp Peaks and the Head Front Stream. He then entrusted the local gentry to build a temple. Twelve local gentry, led by Lin Hixian, initiated the construction of the Lotus Temple (also known as the Guanyin Temple) in 1878, which primarily enshrines the statue of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The temple was unfortunately severely damaged in 1895 when Taiwan was ceded to Japan and wars broke out. In 1904, local gentry Lin Ronghe, Lin Qifu, Yang Qingyun, and others launched a reconstruction project, and the temple's religious flame began to flourish once again. In 1959, the Venerable Master Xiuhui took over as the abbot and renovated the environment with a pure Buddhist heart. The grand hall, rooms, and other structures were refurbished to maintain an archaic charm. The temple was revitalized and has since become a sacred site for devotees from not only Zhuobei but also far and wide. The overall architectural style of the Lotus Temple consists of two main halls, two corridors, and two transverse houses. Although the main buildings were damaged during wars and rebuilt by later generations, the current structure stands. On the whole, not only does the architectural layout preserve distinctive characteristics from the late Qing dynasty, the period of Japanese rule, and post-war era, but it also serves as a cultural and religious center in the region. Consequently, it provides rich materials for studying the local culture.
