澎湖縣望安鄉西嶼坪嶼
The westernmost island among the Southern Four Islands is Xiyouping Island, located approximately 25 minutes by boat from Wang'an. It is closely connected to the adjacent Dongyuping Island, collectively referred to as "Banpingyu" or "Yuping." The island's central place of worship, Huaniang Temple, is visible from the shore, dedicated to the principal deity Huaniang, alongside deities such as Wu Shuai and Mazu. To reach the village, one must ascend a slope called "Hero's Slope" from the dock. The path offers views of ancient houses built with polygon stones and basalt, albeit now nearly abandoned as residents have largely relocated. Xiyouping Island features a four-sided mountainous terrain. The eastern side is characterized by columnar basaltic sea cliffs, while western cliffs display wave-cut notches and sea caves formed by coastal erosion. The eastern and northern sides host basalt gravel beaches, and near the northeastern corner of the island, a solitary sea arch emerges from the ocean, locally known as "Diaozi." From the western tip at Xwei Mountain, the view stretches across to Tiezhan Island and Toujin Island, offering a breathtaking horizon of sea and sky. Not only does Xiyouping Island showcase diverse landscapes on land, but its underwater realm is equally vibrant. The surrounding waters are rich in coral diversity and density, the highest coverage in the Southern Four Islands. Extensive branching and table-like axial corals thrive, with colorful marine life inhabiting the reefs, making it a site of significant ecological value and a paradise for snorkelers!
