The Guoya Lime Kiln is located on a slight elevation along the coastal embankment of Guoya Village, where it was constructed in the 1960s by local resident Mr. Chen Fuk-su of Guoya Village as a lime production facility. At the time, Pengeh had a thriving lime industry; the commonly occurring coastal material known as "sandstone" (or locally called "lime aggregate," a mixture of coral fragments and shells) served as the primary raw material for lime. Its whiteness, quality, and properties made it a crucial binding agent for early construction before cement began to replace it. The period from 1948 to 1965, when Taiwan experienced a major housing development movement for "row houses (connected buildings)," marked the peak of Pengeh lime's export. However, the lime industry gradually declined after 1973 due to the competition from modern construction materials, and the Guoya Lime Kiln was completed during the industry's heyday. The Guoya Lime Kiln is well-preserved and serves as a testament to the production methods of oyster shell lime and lime aggregate. Its historical significance remains highly valuable. Primarily built with basalt stones, the kiln was registered as a historical structure in 2007. In 2015, the county government's Cultural Affairs Bureau conducted renovations for preservation; however, the facility remained closed to the public for a long time, and visitors could only admire the beautiful exterior from the outside. Now, through collaborative efforts between the Tourism Bureau and the local community, the Guoya Lime Kiln has opened its doors as a tourism information center and visitor service facility. It offers guided tours and is conveniently located near attractions such as Guoya Sun Observation Tower and Longmen, where one can also observe nearby stone fish traps. This initiative helps visitors connect more closely with the culturally rich historical structure of the Guoya Lime Kiln, while raising awareness of the Guoya community.
