The Cailiao Stream catchment area boasts a unique fossil treasure trove that has garnered attention since 1931. Professor Ichiro Sakasai, a geology professor at Taipei Imperial University, conducted a geological survey in Tainan and collected numerous deer antler fossils in the Cailiao Stream catchment area. He also enlisted the help of local Mr. Chen Chunmu (later known as the "Fossil Grandfather") to collect many precious fossils of ancient elephants, rhinos, water buffalo, and other animals. This laid the foundation for Cailiao Stream to become a research hub for Taiwan's paleontology, and later, the Cailiao Fossil Museum was established. After renovation and expansion, it has become the Tainan Zuojhen Fossil Park that we see today. The Cailiao Stream has yielded an countless number of fossils, including the Zuojhen human skull, and a rhino tooth was later discovered. Through collaboration between Taiwanese and Japanese scholars and the Taiwan Provincial Museum team, a highly complete rhino fossil was excavated, which lived around 900,000 to 450,000 years ago and was named the Sakasai China Rhino. The Zuojhen Fossil Park has accumulated a vast collection of fossils from marine and terrestrial biota, including mammoths, saber-toothed elephants, ancient deer, crocodiles, and shells. A large number of terrestrial vertebrate fossils have been unearthed, which is a notable feature. In addition to the Zuojhen human skull fragments and the restored skeleton of the Sakasai China Rhino, the park is an irreplaceable fossil treasure trove in Taiwan. Today, the Zuojhen Fossil Park has evolved from a single building to five exhibition halls. The Natural History Education Hall simulates the stratigraphic rock wall of Zuojhen, where visitors can experience interactive devices such as fossil excavation and riverbed fossil observation. The Story Hall introduces the Xinhua Hills and showcases the artifacts of the Siraya tribe, including the New Harbor documents, and shares the story of "Fossil Grandfather" Chen Chunmu's contributions to fossil collection. The Life Evolution Hall presents the story of marine life's struggle for survival on land, and the dinosaurs that once dominated the Earth are displayed in the central courtyard. The hall then showcases the rise of mammals on the historical stage, witnessing the prosperity and decline of life evolution. The Fossil Hall features an expanded interactive sand table, allowing visitors to understand the source of fossils in the Cailiao Stream catchment area. The most striking exhibit is the full-body skeleton fossil of the Sakasai China Rhino. The Exploration Hall reveals the mystery of the Zuojhen human and invites visitors to approach the fossil restoration room to see the actual process of fossil restoration. Finally, at the Colorful Magic Interactive Classroom, visitors can interact with the colored Cailiao Stream biota and feed them. Source: Tainan Zuojhen Fossil Park website.
