As Taiwan has entered an industrial and commercial society, mechanized cultivators and iron ox-carts for hauling goods have gradually replaced draft cattle. The social value of oxen has greatly diminished, and the importance of cattle markets and cattle traders has likewise waned. Beigang Cattle Market, one of only two remaining in Taiwan, lies beside the Beigang River, just west of Beigang Bridge. It opens at dawn and closes at noon on the 3rd, 6th and 9th days of every lunar month. In its heyday, transactions once topped a thousand head per session; although cattle are now rarely traded, it remains the favorite open-air bazaar for elderly farmers and tourists across the Yunjia Plain, selling daily necessities, snacks, handicrafts, second-hand electrical tools and more.
