By following the winding Nangang Highway to Wulu Village, and then proceeding along the designated trail, one arrives at the Wulu Artillery Platform hidden deep within the mountain forest. The two ancient cannons, dating back over a century, are positioned on a strategic high ground. Standing here allows visitors to overlook the expansive Wulu Village, Wulu Gorge, and the undulating Central Mountain Range in the distance. The magnificent vista and weathered cannon bodies bear witness to a chapter of poignant anti-Japanese struggle. During the Japanese colonial period, to centralize control of the dispersed Bunun tribal settlements in the mountains, the Japanese authorities imposed strict administration, confiscated weapons and ammunition, and violent conflicts erupted as a result. The most notable event was the Wulu Anti-Japanese Incident. In 1927, the Japanese constructed the Guanshan Cross-Range Trail from Xinwu to Wulu to transport Russian-made cannons captured during the Russo-Japanese War, establishing the Wulu Artillery Platform on elevated terrain to suppress the Bunun's resistance. At that time, artillery posts were also built at nearby Sakoku (Dalun) and Matangokororo (Motian). With the conclusion of World War II and Japan's unconditional surrender, the artillery installations at those other two locations were lost to time, leaving only these two century-old cannons standing behind Wulu Elementary School. They silently endure the beautiful natural scenery and quietly narrate the Bunun people's historic sacrifice for defending their homeland.
