Taichung City Veterans’ Village Museum, built in 1960, is located near the intersection of Jinhua North Road and Beitun Road in North Taichung District. It was originally “Beitun New Village,” later renamed “Lingyun Community,” and is one of the 134 veterans’ villages in Taichung. It mainly housed technical staff at or above the Air Force Academy level from the Guizhou Aircraft Manufacturing Plant and their families. Today, it preserves three representative veterans’ village buildings. Since August 2017, it has been operated and managed by Liangguo Cultural Creative Co., Ltd. In addition to museum exhibitions and promotion, the site offers veterans’ village-style cuisine, vintage ice desserts, Taiwanese barber services, and an old Taiwan antiques shop. A cultural and creative market has been introduced with a modern twist, allowing visitors to experience the new atmosphere that blends old and new veterans’ village elements! Over a decade ago, retired veterans gradually moved out, and after a period of renovation and construction of revitalized veterans’ housing spaces, three representative buildings and their ancillary structures were preserved. The site was completed in mid-November 2014, covering a little over 200 pings, linking present-day city life with the former veterans’ village culture, and is the first local venue in Taichung focused on preserving veterans’ village cultural assets. Beitun New Village housing was built with hollow bricks, with interior areas of 24–28 ping, configured as 2 rooms, 1 living room, and bathroom facilities. For its time, it was quite spacious and comfortable. Later, in 1966, an additional batch of houses was built on the north side of “Beitun New Village” for pilots and their families, named “Lingyun Community.” The space was even larger, with front and back yards, and remained part of “Beitun New Village.” Many important Taiwanese figures once lived here, such as novelist Meng Yao, military judge Liu Longfei of the Formosa Incident, mathematics authority Lin Zhiping of National Chung Hsing University, women’s movement pioneer He Chunru, and Air Force pilot Ouyang Yifeng, giving the place special commemorative value. From the entrance of the museum, one can see the old “Beitun New Village Guo Zai Store.” Inside, the classic sour-sweet taste and marble ball game evoke many childhood memories. The “Xiao Meihua Trading Store” features various old Taiwanese household items and nostalgic literature, allowing visitors to feel the aesthetic of early life. Walking along the path through narrow alleys between the housing units, you’ll find a traditional Taiwanese barbershop “Da Fang Men’s Barber” serving men. Continuing to the next building, there’s a permanent exhibition on the history and development of the veterans’ village, with an annual rotating special exhibition that sparks endless imagination about veterans’ village life. Finally, you can experience the “Fangzheng Valley Veterans’ Village Flavor” with its “taro sweet potato” dish, tasting “Old Taiwanese Cuisine” and “Veterans’ Village Cuisine,” even with some Southeast Asian cultural influences! At the end, order a bowl of traditional shaved ice at the “Fei Bing Gu Shi” and wander the “Rescue Soldier Market,” held once a month. Through various senses, you’ll get a nostalgic experience of veterans’ village life—very satisfying!
