The Cih-Han Temple (also known as the Mazu Temple) in Shilin is a temple dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea, and is located within the well-known Shilin Night Market. The temple was originally built in 1796 (the first year of the Qing Jiaqing Emperor) on land donated by He Jintang, and was then called the Temple of the Sea Goddess. In 1859 (the ninth year of the Xianfeng Emperor), a Hakka-Fujian conflict occurred, and the streets of Zhilan, where the temple was located, were burned down, and the temple was destroyed. After the streets were destroyed, the scholar Pan Yongqing led an effort to rebuild the streets at a new location, which was agreed upon by most of the residents. The new streets were built at the location of today's Shilin, and a plot of land in the center of the new streets was set aside for the construction of a new temple. The Cih-Han Temple is a temple with a two-hall, two-corridor, two-protected dragon layout. It features five courtyards and a typical Southern Fujian-style temple with a two-story structure connected by corridors. The roof of the first hall, the Sanchuan Hall, is a type of roof with a gabled and overhung eave, commonly referred to as a "prince's building". The octagonal pillars with a single coiled dragon in the main hall were made during the Guangxu period, while the Qilin walls on the left and right were built in 1828. The colorful paintings of palace ladies and the door gods Wei Chi Gong and Qin Shubao on the doors are the work of the modern master craftsman Chen Yufeng. Next to the main hall is a stone wall with a picture of old Shilin, allowing people to recall the streets and scenery of Shilin in the past.
