Moon Cave is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, situated south of Shitiping and approximately one kilometer from Gangkou Village. It is a natural limestone cave and considered a sacred land by the indigenous people of the Gangkou community. The cave has a 5-meter-deep underground lake, whose water levels rise and fall with the phases of the moon, hence its name "Moon Cave," also known as "Moon Well." According to local legends, the lake is home to numerous lates, including a "thousand-year eel" weighing over ten kilograms said to be aggressive; as such, no one has dared to explore the waters to date. The Moon Cave sits at an elevation of approximately 80 meters above sea level, roughly 800 meters inland from the coast. The entrance stands about 25 meters high, and the cave stretches roughly 176 meters long with a unique shape. Inside, there are two inner tunnels to the left and right of the cave. The left tunnel is wider, extending approximately 50 meters, narrowing upward toward the top. It shelters vast colonies of bats, adding a mysterious atmosphere. In contrast, the right-side cavity is shorter, spanning about 40 meters. Inside the cave are dark, mysterious environments and stalagmite traces covering the walls. Swarms of hanging bats create scenic elements such as concealed subterranean streams, water drip formations, stalagmite-like stone needles, fossilized bird nests, and fishhead fossils. To venture inside for exploration and sightseeing, visitors must board a small vessel driven by a professional guide, who provides lighting to explore the cave. The temperature within the Moon Cave remains around 20°C, making it pleasantly cool in summer yet warm in winter, an ideal destination for recreational visits year-round.
