Ancient people, in order to show reverence for the transmission of knowledge and the power of written words, established pavilions such as the Pavilion of Reverence for Characters and the Pavilion of Cherishing Characters as incineration structures for paper with text. Since the Hakka people have historically valued scholarly pursuits, they often built reverence character pavilions in their settlements. The Longtan Holy Site Pavilion is currently the best-preserved and largest such pavilion in the country. It was constructed in AD 1875 with funding from supervisory students like Gu Xiangxian. The pavilion's current appearance dates back to a reconstruction in 1925 during the Japanese colonial period. The entire structure is designed symmetrically around a central axis, featuring the main pavilion body, central gate, and main entrance, creating a feeling of ethereal solemnity and order. Two towering stone brushes symbolize the elevated status of ancient scholarly traditions and express respect for written words. The central gate, composed of a smooth cloud-patterned wall and a bayi gate, demonstrates the designer's deep understanding and meticulous attention to the essence of the reverent character pavilion.
