Arriving at the lively Zhongli Yanping Road, the historic "Renhai Gong," with over a hundred years of heritage, consistently sees its incense offerings thriving and attracts numerous devotees for worship. Beyond the temple's long history, the city boasts rich cultural landscapes within. The "Japanese-style dormitory" located inside Xinjiej ES, after restorations, became the first historical building in Taoyuan situated within a school campus. Enriched by surrounding historical and cultural sites, Zhongli offers visitors, in addition to Hakka cultural experiences, a light travel journey appreciating historical charm and local traditions. Entering Xinjiej ES, on the northern side of the newly built Chao Yang Building, lies an old Japanese-style wooden structure with nostalgic elegance that draws attention from passersby. This Japanese dormitory, built in Showa 9 (1934), initially served as a residence for school staff during Japanese colonial times. In 2003 (R.O.C. 92) during Xinjiej ES's campus redevelopment, this 80-plus-year-old building was discovered. Remarkably well-preserved, it was registered as a historical site by the Taoyuan Cultural Bureau in 2004 (R.O.C. 93) and restored from 2005 (R.O.C. 94) to 2009 (R.O.C. 98), taking four years to complete. Its classic charm stops many visitors for photos, and the open corridor outside invites moments of restful leisure. The current Japanese dormitory is a single-story wooden building with sloping roof tiles in black-gray cement, creating layered spatial variation with its sloped design. Courtyards in front and behind show its past grandeur, while the well-preserved outer walls include elevated wooden floors about 60 cm off the ground. This elevated construction promotes air circulation, forming an open corridor where visitors may sit to experience old Japanese living styles. The space is tastefully arranged, allowing visitors to enjoy peaceful walks and sit anywhere for an immersive Japanese ambiance. Lush greenery flanking the dormitory adds scenic beauty, especially in spring when cherry blossoms transform it into a hidden gem away from crowds, offering unique spring scenery. The campus also features interpretive plaques about the dormitory, a timewalk wooden pathway, ecological pond, signage for surrounding attractions, and designated areas for community arts and school teaching activities, making this classic old building part of everyday life rather than an aloof relic. For visitors reaching Xinjiej ES, continuing briefly on foot reveals nearby attractions including Shengzhi Pavilion, Renhai Gong, Jiangxia Hall, Yu Hua Temple, and the Martyrs' Hall, enriching city exploration with cultural depth.
