Itashaoshao, formerly known as “Dehua Village” and “Huafan Village,” is where the Thao people mainly live and the most populous settlement on the shores of Sun Moon Lake. Back then, President Chiang Kai-shek loved to row here to watch Thao mountain song-and-dance, turning the village into an important indigenous cultural park at the lake. Today Itashaoshao is home to Thao, Atayal, and Han Chinese together; inside the village are souvenir shops, restaurants, and hotels. Around August 15 every year, the local Thao hold a grand ceremony: the whole tribe turns out, and visitors who come at this time can feast on the Thao’s captivating traditions. In addition, Itashaoshao is also the trailhead for Mount Shuishe.
