In 2002, Teacher Ah Liang established the Jiuyou Pottery Studio in Chuluo, Taitung. The studio was named “Jiuyou,” actually a play on the local place name “New Class” (New Ban) “鸠” (jiū). “Pottery” was chosen with the hope of following famous Japanese ceramic traditions such as “Shinano-yaki,” so that Jiuyou Pottery could share the long lineage and intergenerational legacy of these renowned ceramic arts.
Besides continuously researching and refining artistic creations every year, with an expectation of cultural inheritance and exchange, Ah Liang and Teacher Xiazi also began teaching pottery. Through the organization of pottery‑teaching workshops, they opened the door of artistic creation to the public. Year by year, through collaborative proposals with various fields, they began to produce household ceramics, business‑customized goods, public art projects, pottery courses, DIY experiences, kiln‑culture guided tours, and handcrafted jewelry research.
In the Jiuyou Pottery exhibition room, one can see dark‑glossy, exquisitely crafted Paiwan traditional pottery jars, and also discover the “Zhulu” series of small items inspired by local place names such as Chuluo and Luyan—ideal for displaying business cards.
