The Bai Sha Jia Light is located at the Guanyin coast. Before the construction of the Tainan Guosheng Light, it was once the westernmost lighthouse on the main island of Taiwan. A circular trail is set up around this historic site, and travelers can also visit the nearby Guanyin coastal recreation area. The white tower stands out vividly against the blue sea and sky, and has been a famous scenic spot in Taiwan since its 1901 opening during the Japanese colonial era. Having endured over a century of time, it was selected into the "100 Famous Historical Buildings of Taiwan" by the National Cultural Property Conference in 2001. The following year the lighthouse itself, the surrounding walls, and the sundial from the Japanese period were designated as Taoyuan’s first county-level cultural heritage. In May 2021, the site was designated Taoyuan's second national-level cultural heritage. The Bai Sha Jia tower stands at 37 meters with the second highest height among coastal beacons in Taiwan after Kenting Gepan Light. What makes this structure unique is that it is the only lighthouse in Taiwan built with red bricks and stone, unlike other towers constructed with concrete. During the late Qing Dynasty, most lighthouse components were imported from Britain and France. The manufacturer would first cast the tower body, lighting fixtures, and other parts, loading them onto ships, and then transport and assemble them at the designated location. The completion of Bai Sha Jia Light took three years, but unlike others that used cast iron assembly, its special feature is a "brick and stone construction" dual-layer brick and stone seismic-resistant structure, as it was called in Japanese. The upper part of the circular brick tower is built with large stone brackets that support the cast iron tower top. The lighthouse has weathered intense bombing from World War II aircraft and several earthquakes and typhoons without significant damage. To this day, it remains standing, illuminating the Taiwan Strait, guarding ships on the sea. The tower's architecture and internal facilities span over a century, and the site preserves relics such as a Japanese colonial-era sundial used for determining time, direction, and latitude according to the shadow cast by the sun. It also features a clock manufactured by the Shang hai Jixie Jú (Shanghai Machine Bureau) and a 100-year-old Chinese mahogany tree established since the Japanese period, which still stands tall with vigor in the garden. This beacon of the Taiwan Strait maintains a quiet and serene surroundings where small bridges cross streams, rice paddies and ponds lie in view, and wooden boardwalks and winding trails lead to charming views. The lighthouse itself provides excellent photo backdrops, and bicycles can be parked along the roadside before entering the area. There is a tour guide room within the area to help visitors better understand the equipment and features of the lighthouse. Circular trails, parks, pavilions, plazas, and children's playgrounds have been established alongside the tower. The trail follows along the Guanyin Creek, offering scenes of bridges over streams, rice paddies, and ponds. The clock tower plaza and the human-shaped arch bridge of Guanyin Creek make for excellent wedding photography locations.
