宜蘭縣大同鄉臺中市424和平區思源埡口
The Si-Yuan Yakuo is situated at the boundary between Taichung City and Yilan County, falling within the jurisdiction of Datuan Township in Yilan County. It stands at an altitude of 1,948 meters and is the lowest saddle where the Nanhu Mountain ridge meets the Taoyan Ridge. It also marks the watershed between the Lanyang River and the Dajia River, as well as the climatic boundary between two distinct climate zones. The site was formerly known as “Biyanan,” a name derived from the Atayal language meaning “a place where ancestors once visited.” The Japanese transliterated it as “Biyanan,” and later the government renamed it “Siyuan,” a phrase that conveys the idea of remembering one’s source of water. The term “Yakuo” refers to the depression where two mountains connect. The forest here is predominantly subtropical, featuring red cypress and Chinese fir at higher elevations, with additional species such as aromatic cypress, stone oak, red maple, and Japanese cedar throughout. It supports a diverse array of wildlife and insects, creating a rich natural ecosystem. Si-Yuan Yakuo serves as a link between the Snow Mountain Range and the Central Mountain Range, resulting in distinct seasons and beautiful scenery. In spring and summer, flowers abound; in autumn and winter, leaves change color and fall. With ample moisture, even snowfall can occur, offering a picturesque scene reminiscent of a northern country.
