Historical Development The Taipei Beer Factory was originally known as the "Nihon Takasago Beer Stock Company," established in 1919, and was the only beer factory in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era. After being taken over by the government in 1945, it was under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan Provincial Tobacco and Liquor Monopoly Bureau's "Second Brewery," and was renamed "Jian Guo Beer Factory" in 1975. During this period, the brewery underwent improvements in brewing techniques and manufacturing equipment, and new facilities were added, resulting in an increase in production. The highest production record was 12 million cases of beer per year. On July 1, 1997, the Jian Guo Beer Factory merged with the Fu Xing Beer Factory, and the Jian Guo Factory became the Jian Guo Plant of the Fu Xing Beer Factory. On June 2000, the Taipei City Government designated the "Jian Guo Beer Factory" as a city-designated historic site (No. 95), preserving the most important cultural asset of the beer industry in Taiwan. The factory business was then managed by the "Bottle Cap Factory" from April 2001, and in 2002, the Taiwan Provincial Tobacco and Liquor Monopoly Bureau was reorganized into Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, and the "Jian Guo Plant" was renamed "Taipei Beer Factory." In November 2003, the "Taipei Beer Factory" was placed under the jurisdiction of the "Zhu Nan Beer Factory." On April 30, 2007, Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, in order to preserve cultural heritage and fulfill social responsibility, established a task force to manage the Taipei Beer Factory, and on July 1, 2008, it was reorganized into an independent unit, the Taipei Beer Factory. Factory Address and Area The old address of the Taipei Beer Factory was 1407 Zhongzheng Road, Taipei City, and after the city was reorganized, it was changed to its current address: 85, Bade Road, Section 2, Taipei City. The land area is 52,630 square meters, and it is zoned as a third-type industrial area. The factory includes buildings such as the brewing building, fermentation building, wine storage building, packaging factory, finished goods warehouse, administrative building, repair factory, and staff welfare building. The total building area is 25,627.71 square meters, and the total floor area is 34,638.91 square meters. Cultural Preservation The Taipei Beer Factory is the only beer factory in Taiwan with historical value. Beer, as a foreign product, was introduced to Taiwan just over a century ago. During the imperialist era, foreign beer was imported to supply expatriates and sold on the market. Taiwan had beer before it had a beer factory. Foreign capitalists took advantage of Taiwan's cheap raw materials and labor to establish beer factories. Future Prospects Countries with progressive industries have good examples of preserving old industries and reusing ancient buildings. For example, the "Beer Museum" in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, was originally a national beer factory built with bricks in 1890. After renovation in 1966, it became a beer house, the "Sapporo Beer Garden," and has since become a sacred site in Sapporo. The Taipei Beer Factory occupies a vast area, and to preserve the important cultural industry – the birthplace of Taiwanese beer – the factory will retain its existing production lines and systematically plan the use of the other areas. The architectural style and original functions will be preserved and redeveloped into a multi-purpose special zone that combines production, tourism, commerce, culture, and leisure, in line with the development trend of modern cities, making Taipei a city with unique characteristics.
