Shanli Train Station was established on June 27, 1982, and constructed to accommodate the needs of train overtaking after the railway's eastern expansion and realignment. Located 6.2 kilometers north of Luyeh and 8 kilometers south of Taitung, the station currently has an average daily user count of about seven people, and all reservation-based trains bypass it. After the eastern segment of the railway was electrified, wooden planks were added to the original quay-type platforms while the island platforms remained unchanged, preserving the stylistic characteristics of the eastern expansion era. Originally part of a narrow-gauge railway passing through Zhongxing, Jiafeng, Chulu, Dongcheng, Binlang, and Malan stations, the route was later rerouted during the eastern expansion project to create a single-track meeting point for the railway. This addition brought about two new stops: Shanli and Bina. When the Ministry of Transportation's Rail Gauge Modification Bureau launched the "Hsueh-tung New Stations Movement" for railway electrification, Shanli Station was among the selected sites that were subsequently renovated. Following writer Liu Kehsiang's designation of Shanli Station as "the station you can't reach," many railway enthusiasts and visitors have flocked to this picturesque hidden gem nestled in the mountains. To ensure visitor safety and ease of management before electrification, an observation deck was built on the station's outer land for elevated viewing of trains and the station itself. While utility poles and cables now slightly obstruct the view, ascending to the observation deck still allows a clear sight of trains passing through and stunning vistas stretching out to the horizon.
