Nori Reef is located along the northwest coastline of Zhuwan Village. This area features various unique landforms, including wave-cut gullies, wave-cut platforms, and impressive clusters of basalt columns. Below these basalt columns, elongated rocky reefs extending north-south also represent notable characteristics of the region. These reefs extend into the ocean and are constantly impacted by waves throughout the year, providing abundant conditions for the cultivation of nori seaweed, hence the name "Nori Reef." It is the natural nori growing area of Zhuwan.
Nori Reef is considered a communal property of Zhuwan Village. Harvesting rights are publicly auctioned every September, with the highest bidder securing the rights. The harvesting period runs from the winning date in September to April of the following year. During this time, villagers who did not secure the bid may collect nori for use as fishing bait, but they are not allowed to take it away. The harvesting rights are exclusively owned by the winning bidder.
Wild-grown nori thrives on rocky reefs battered by surf and tidal flows, exhibiting a strong seasonal preference for cold winter months. The quality of nori is significantly influenced by weather conditions. The ideal environment for growth is found on wave-cut platforms with minimal sunlight and frequent surges of wave impacts. The adage recorded in ancient texts, "More waves mean more yield, fewer waves mean less yield," accurately reflects the conditions of wild nori cultivation.
Nori Reef is a locally cherished, private natural spot in Zhuwan with high seclusion. On the way to Xiaomen Village, a fork in the road appears approximately 200 meters away from Xiaomen Bridge. Following the winding path through the pasture leads to Zhuwan Nori Reef.
The first sight upon arrival is a layer of rust-red quartzite sandstone exposed by the force of rainwater, rich in iron content. Adjacent to it, a pavilion is present. Besides offering a resting place for villagers and visitors, the pavilion provides scenic viewpoints from its top level. Looking out from the pavilion, one can see the beautiful sight where sky and sea converge, with the deep blue sky, expansive ocean, and in-depth nori reefs in the distance. Down the slope to the side are varied wave-sculpted terraces and stepped landforms. Most captivating is the entire row of basalt columns, which, when struck by waves, create the most beautiful natural splashes. In addition to producing nori, this site is a prime place for watching waves, sunset,矶fishing, and observing diverse geological features.
