The Wen Kai Academy Martial Temple, Wenchang Shrine, and Wen Kai Academy are three adjacent buildings arranged in a row. In the fourth year of the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty (1824), the Maritime Defense Censor of Lukang, Deng Chuan’an, proposed the construction of an academy. Merchants and gentry from the eight suburbs of Quanzhou and Xiamen responded by offering donations, and the construction of the academy was completed in 1827 during the seventh year of the Daoguang era. Named "Wen Kai Academy," it was established to commemorate the Confucian scholar Shen Guangwen. Shen Guangwen’s courtesy name was "Wen Kai."
