To achieve “balanced development between north and south” and “cultural equity,” and to spur cultural, educational, social, and economic growth in central and southern Taiwan, the Executive Yuan approved on 15 December 2004 the establishment of the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum in Taibao City, Chiayi County. Positioned as an “Asian Art and Culture Museum,” its exhibitions draw primarily on the NPM’s rich holdings, supplemented by international loans, and actively present a variety of outstanding shows while fulfilling every modern museum function: collection, research, conservation, education, display, recreation, leisure, and creative enterprise.
The museum’s architecture adopts the three ink-painting techniques of dark wash, flying-white, and wash-and-ink to create solid volumes for galleries and storage, void volumes for public reception, and penetrating connectors—symbolizing the interweaving of Chinese, Indian, and Persian cultures into the long, diverse civilization of Asia, perfectly echoing the mission of the “Southern Branch—Asian Art and Culture Museum.”
