Once fertile farmland, Chenglong Wetland in Yunlin’s Kouhu Township had to be abandoned when land subsidence allowed seawater to rush in. Yet this ecological rebirth lures rare birds—Black-faced Spoonbills among them—and, after artists installed the “Water Core” land-art piece, the glowing sunset has become a must-see landmark. A designated national wetland of importance, the reserve now teems with life: thousands of migrating birds pause here each year, including endangered Black-faced Spoonbills, Little Terns and Common Kestrels, while fish and crabs abound, turning the former wasteland into a premier local attraction.
