Hesnan Temple is located in Yanyao Village, Shoufeng Township, Hualien County. Following the Dharma transmission of Master Hsuan Hua, it is not only a famous Buddhist site in eastern Taiwan but also a sanctuary of Buddhist art. Founded by the late Venerable Master Chuan Qing in 1967 after crossing mountains and ridges to cultivate here, the temple is nestled against the mountains with a view to the Pacific Ocean. Its architectural style is simple and modest. On the verdant hills behind the temple stands the golden-plated statue of Kuan Yin, "The Benefical Kuan Yin," which was collectively completed by the venerable Master Chuan Qing and renowned international sculptor Professor Yang Yingfeng. Regarded as a national treasure-class masterwork, the dignified image of this statute has long become the spiritual symbol of the temple.
Hesnan Temple spreads Buddhism through "Buddhist Art Multimedia," integrating Buddhism, literature, music, fine arts, voice-over, photography, and computer technology. Through beautiful and moving audio-visual presentations, it elucidates profound and subtle Buddhist teachings, allowing the wisdom of the dharma to naturally resonate within people's hearts. This innovative approach has received high acclaim, positioning Hesnan Temple as a pioneer of modern religious art. Apart from regular group dharma gatherings, the temple regularly hosts events including the Buddhist Art Festival, Lantern Festival, concerts, and competitions for essays, poetry, and short stories. Additionally, every summer brings the Hesnan Buddhist Art Summer Camp for university students or children, and in late October, a charity fair. All these events are open to the public and completely free of charge.
