Lan Tan Lake, located near Shanzidong in the eastern suburb of Chiayi City, is about three kilometers from the city. It was originally called "Hongmaopi". According to legend, it was a pond dug by the Dutch 300 years ago, hence the name "Lan Tan". During the Dutch period, water from the Bazhangxi River was channeled into the pond, and a weir was built to irrigate the Wangtian area. The Dutch East India Company directly managed Wangtian, which still existed during the Zheng period, but was gradually abandoned after the Qing dynasty took over. However, the place name still exists. During the Japanese colonial era, the engineer of the "Great Wall of Water" - the Jianan Grand Canal, Hatta Yuichi, built a dam in Lan Tan as a reservoir for the waterworks. To this day, it remains the primary source of tap water for the Chiayi area. The night view of Lan Tan Lake is the most beautiful in Chiayi, with the reputation as "Moonlight on Lan Tan Lake". The serene and romantic atmosphere of the lake at night makes it one of the eight scenic spots in Chiayi. Inside the Sanxin Pavilion, visitors can stroll, talk, gather with family and friends, and enjoy tea and chat under the gentle breeze and elegant moonlight, adding to the warmth and beauty of Lan Tan. The lake water is crystal clear and visible to the bottom. The surrounding hills roll and undulate. The landscape and lake form a picturesque scene. When the lake encounters the moonlit night, it becomes a poetic and painting-like picture. Therefore, "Moonlight on Lan Tan Lake" is listed as one of the eight scenic spots in Chiayi. Along the lake, there is a ring-shaped highway. Visitors can walk around the lake and see the viewing pavilion. Standing on the top of the pavilion provides a panoramic view of Lan Tan Lake. There are several trails leading to the hills behind Lan Tan Lake. The trees along the trail continuously release their fragrance. The flat areas naturally form badminton courts or dancing grounds. Some parts of the trail are steep, becoming a challenging spot for sports enthusiasts. The natural resources around Lan Tan Lake are rich. The Chiayi Wilderness Conservation Association has set up observation groups in the areas of Lan Tan, Shumu Garden, Tao Huayuan, and Yuan Lanzi Cold Spring. Over the years, they have led many ecological enthusiasts to visit the beautiful and diverse nature. They hope that through in-depth observation and experience, people can get close to nature and make it a way of life, not just an idea. They expect everyone to befriend the numerous birds, insects, plants, and big trees. Through the learning process, people can appreciate the beauty of ecology and understand the true meaning of biodiversity.
