Established in 2011, the museum was created by the Fourth District Maintenance Engineering Office of the Highway Bureau to record and preserve the history of the construction of highways in the eastern part of Taiwan. The museum features roads, bridges, and tunnels as its main themes, presented through photographs, artifacts, and models. It showcases the challenging journey of road construction and bridge building since 1949, commemorating the perseverance and dedication of the predecessors.
The Fourth District Maintenance Engineering Office of the Highway Bureau was established on October 1, 1949. Over the past six decades, the office has overcome numerous challenges and created remarkable highway achievements in Yilan and Hualien counties. The stories of the past are filled with a mix of sweet and bitter experiences.
Reflecting on the journey, the predecessors in the highway industry have contributed their wisdom and hard work, shouldering the historical responsibility and sacred mission of building and improving the roads. Their spirit of perseverance and resilience is a shining example for us to learn from.
To record and preserve the growth process of the eastern highways, honor the predecessors who built the roads with manual labor and simple tools, and showcase the precious achievements of highway construction, the museum was established to preserve and exhibit the relevant historical artifacts. By doing so, it aims to pass on the experience, inspire new colleagues, and serve as a core benchmark for learning, while promoting the spirit of "highway people" who persevere through challenges.
