The Mayors' Residence was built in 1940, and the interior combines tatami-matted Japanese-style rooms with Western-style furniture, resembling a modern art museum in "Japanese-Western hybrid" architectural style. Mayors before 1994 nearly all lived here. After Mayor Huang Dazhou moved out, it has been vacant since. Following the establishment of the Taipei City Cultural Development Division, the building was leased to external operators and opened to the public, becoming a cultural art center emphasizing literature, history, and philosophy, hosting diverse art exhibitions and events and offering art education courses for the public.
The Mayors' Residence has an art restaurant, a performance hall, a small VIP conference room, a Japanese-style lecture hall, a lifestyle art gallery, a Sunrise Bookstore, and two open courtyards with approximately 100 ping total floor area in front and rear. The art restaurant is a popular spot that fills its outdoor seats on good weather days; the signature dishes are roast lamb shank and German pork knuckle. Additionally, the Mayors' Residence offers specialty sets, business lunch sets, varied flavors, and specially prepared vegetarian vegetable paella for vegan guests, which is thoughtful and considerate. The Sunrise Bookstore only sells poetry anthologies. It is the sole poetry-specialized bookstore in Taipei, and everyone is encouraged to visit this cultural art space to enrich their inner spirit.
