The old place name of Zhongtun in Penghu is called Zhongdu, because it is located between Penghu Main Island and Baisha Island and forms a mound. After the restoration, the name was changed to Zhongtun by a phonetic pun. Later, the Yong'an Bridge and Zhongzheng Bridge were built, connecting Baisha to the north and Penghu Main Island to the south. After the construction of the sea-crossing bridge, the four towns of Magong, Huxi, Baisha, and Xiyu were linked together. When traveling along the northern loop tourism route, you will see eight snow‑white windmills reflected in the sky as you cross the Zhongzheng Bridge. The northeast monsoon in winter and the south‑westerly wind in summer pass over the blades, creating a powerful “whoosh” sound.
To green Penghu and replace electricity generation with natural resources, the Taiwan Power Company has built eight wind farms in Penghu, which has abundant wind resources. It is the first area in Taiwan to use wind power, and the electricity generated provides about 10 % of Penghu County’s power consumption, thus serving an important environmental function. The wind farm in Zhongtun Village, Baisha Township, is Taiwan’s second wind farm and the third‑generation wind turbine in Penghu. It consists of four 6‑kW white wind turbines. When the wind changes, the blade angles adjust accordingly, and the rotational speed can be tuned to meet power demand. At the entrance, there is a pavilion and a sea‑view park where you can take photos with the giant windmills. This site is now planned to become a wind‑mill park, a famous tourist attraction and new landmark of Baisha Township. On the northern loop tour, you can get off and take photos with these massive windmills, all of which are equipped with nighttime lighting. At night, light beams shoot upward from the base of the turbines, making the rotating windmills look even cleaner and brighter in the dark. Nearby is Baisha Zhongtun Green Energy Park, featuring a corridor, pavilion, observation platform, and more.
