JapaneseEnglish Korean Hong Genshin (1946-), a native of Dingwan Village, Huxi Township, Hualien County, is a well-known contemporary Chinese‑ink painter in Taiwan. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, returned to his hometown to teach at Magong Junior High School for one year, then moved to Kaohsiung, where he taught at Daren Junior High School, Kaohsiung High School, and National Kaohsiung Normal University. He has become an important representative artist through his modern Chinese‑ink works and has actively participated in the Southern Taiwan modern art movement, leaving a profound influence. To honor his outstanding artistic achievements and contributions, Hualien County has established the Hong Genshin Art Museum in a historic building, inviting Professor Xiao Qiong‑rui to curate the opening exhibition. The exhibition will focus on three aspects: “Hong Genshin the Artist,” “Hong Genshin the Movement Activist,” and “Hong Genshin the Art Educator.” It is hoped that the museum will become a major Chinese‑ink base in the country and continue to promote the development of contemporary Chinese‑ink art. The site originally served as the Qing‑dynasty Taiwan Prefecture Penghu Inspectorate’s Sub‑Commander of the Water Service (the Xiezhen Office), later becoming the Penghu District Judge’s Office. During Japanese rule, the “Penghu Island Military Police Detachment” was established here. It was subsequently rebuilt into the current cultural creative center, fencing hall, stables, and tea room—these are the buildings from that era. After the war, the site was used by the Penghu Defense Command’s Transportation Department. In 1958, it was reorganized into the Magong Port Command of the Penghu Defense Command. In 1995, two Japanese‑style dormitories were demolished and replaced with a two‑storey reinforced concrete building, now the “Dormitory Building” behind the current park. In 2002, the Hualien County Government officially registered the site as a historic building. **Closed days:** Mondays, Tuesdays, and national holidays. **Lunch break:** 12:00 – 14:00.
