Wenshan Civic Hall

2017-07-05
台北市文山區木柵路三段189號(文山區行政中心對面)
Once an old, abandoned, wooden school principal's residence, the building was renovated and transformed into an elegant structure blending Japanese simplicity with modern style, symbolizing the significance of inheritance and the connection between the old and the new.   The construction and establishment of the Wenshan Citizens' Hall went through a difficult process. Starting from May 1999, when a meeting was held to discuss the proposal for the site of the Wenshan Citizens' Hall, through many meetings such as "Local Leaders' Workshop," "Public Hearing for Wenshan Citizens' Hall," and "Comprehensive Planning Meeting for Wenshan Citizens' Hall," discussions were conducted by community planners, representatives of civil organizations, school authorities, parents, and community residents, which helped to reach a consensus on the planning, renovation, and utilization. In 2002 (Republic of China Year 91), a groundbreaking ceremony was held, and on October 19, a grand opening ceremony was held. From then on, the Japanese-style building, constructed in the 16th year of the Republic of China, was given a new look, and once again took on the important task of developing the local cultural history, industrial characteristics, and enhancing the awareness of the community residents, and it also became one of the best examples of the reuse of idle spaces.   The Wenshan Elementary School was established in the sixth year before the Republic of China. Originally a branch of the Jingwei Public School, Mr. Liu Shanming became the second principal in 1946 (Republic of China Year 35). Principal Liu was strict in school management and was very involved in local public affairs. He cultivated countless talents and was deeply respected by the people of Wenshan as an educational worker. Principal Liu retired in 1969 (Republic of China Year 58) and passed away in 1982 (Republic of China Year 71). His wife continued to live in the old principal's residence, filled with many memories of her life, until she passed away in 1992 (Republic of China Year 81). Since then, the old principal's residence has been idle and not used again.   The citizens' hall of this area is located directly opposite the administrative center of Wenshan District, adjacent to Wenshan Elementary School. It is located next to the Jingmei River, with a land area of 636 square meters. The internal and external spaces are divided into the service desk, lecture hall, outdoor plaza, and multi-functional outdoor plaza, which can be used for teaching, public art, tree classroom, and multi-functional exhibition spaces. It is an elegant building with deep local and cultural values and symbolic significance.   The new hall is a newly built two-story building. In addition to displaying the history of the area, the development history of the district, old historical photos, and local industrial characteristics, to improve the quality of cultural life, it regularly invites artists, cultural workers, groups, and communities to hold various art creation exhibitions on the first and second floors. It also provides rental services.   The old hall is a renovated Japanese-style building, serving as an open exhibition space. It also provides rental services for the public and groups to hold various meetings, reading clubs, and academic and intellectual activities.   Wenshan is a great place with abundant humanistic resources and beautiful mountains and rivers, as well as rich humanistic history and industrial characteristics. A visit to this elegant and historically rich citizens' hall not only allows you to understand the past and present of Wenshan, but also experience the beautiful and elegant architecture with historical value. We sincerely look forward to the visit of all citizens!
