Mingtan Reservoir is located in the river valley of Sun River at the border of Ruisui Township and Fish Pond Township along Highway 131. It is an artificial lake constructed using the natural topography of Sun River to store the tailwater after power generation at Sun Moon Lake. Mingtan and Minghu Reservoirs in Checheng Village are eco-conceptual pumped storage power plants, which are man-made lakes designed specifically for hydropower generation. By utilizing elevation differences for pumping and storage power generation, this method not only adjusts power supply automatically between peak and off-peak hours but is also pollution-free. The lower pool dam of Mingtan Reservoir is a concrete gravity dam. The reservoir forms a sickle-shaped water area with a storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters. Daily water levels fluctuate by 28 meters, creating a unique tidal phenomenon of the lake. In the early morning, a mystical scenery emerges with clouds and mist drifting around the reservoir, creating a unique, otherworldly atmosphere. Situated beneath the highway, the lake presents a serene and idyllic landscape, whether viewed from above on the highway or experienced in person at the lakefront.
