Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean Penghu area has two official city deities temples. Because the early development of Penghu was concentrated around Wen'ao, but the inland area of Wen'ao is small and development is limited, with the growth of Ma'guang (now Magong), the Qing court moved the Penghu prefecture office to Ma'guang and built Ma'guang City, which also established the Ma'guang City Deity Temple. It is currently a Grade III historic monument designated by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China. During the Guangxu era, French forces invaded Penghu. While residents were fleeing, they were hit by French artillery fire. The people could only pray for the protection of the City Deity. A heavy rain fell at that moment, preventing the French shells from detonating, and they escaped unharmed. After the Sino-French War concluded, the Qing court was impressed by the miracle of the City Deity Temple and conferred the title “Ling Ying Hou” (Spiritally Responsive Marquis). Hence there is a plaque titled “Cai Feng Ling Ying Hou” hanging inside the central hall. In the rear hall is a plaque titled “Guangxu Yu Ci “Gong Cun Huan Wei” (Guangxu's Imperial Grant – Merit in Defense), and the seal inscription on the plaque is the “Guangxu Yu Bi Zhi Bao” (Guangxu’s Imperial Calligraphy Treasure). The City Deity Temple faces south, with the layout proceeding from the Sanchuan Hall, the Bayi Pavilion, to the main hall. On both sides, the side chambers are connected, forming an “Kou” (mouth) shaped configuration. The most striking feature upon entering the Sanchuan Hall is the two cautionary plaques, “You Have Arrived” and “Repentant Lateness,” donated by the magistrate Cheng Bangji. On the walls between the left and right corners of the hall are the characters “Zhang Shan” (Emphasize Goodness) and “Fa E” (Punish Evil), and the temple honors Generals Fan and Xie and the civil and military officials.
