It's also an ideal spot to take in the scenic views of the lake. The name of the landscape art piece is "Nest Building Project II - Formosan Blue Magpie". The Formosan blue magpie, a native Taiwanese subspecies of bird, is found in mid-to-high-altitude mountainous regions. It's known for its yellow-green back feathers. These birds can also be spotted at Sun Moon Lake. Every spring, the Formosan blue magpie searches for gaps in rock walls and tree holes to build nests. Using materials such as moss, lichen, animal hair, tree bark, and branches, they weave bowl-shaped nests. Taiwanese artist Fan Cheng-tsung's "Nest Building Project" learns from animal architects in nature. For his creation at Sun Moon Lake, he focused on the Formosan blue magpie's nesting methods. He interprets the bird's nesting process and techniques using human wood-rope construction skills. At the Ita Thao Pier, he built a small nest where travelers landing can take a moment to rest.
