花蓮縣豐濱鄉豐濱北回歸線遊憩區
Taiwan has three Tropic of Cancer markers in total, located in Chia Yi Shui Shang Hsiang, Hualien Wu Hse T'ai Ti, and Fengpin Township, with this particular marker situated at 70.5 km along Taiwan Route 11. The white landmark, commanding scenic views of coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean, often draws numerous tourists for photo-taking and leisure. Ever wondered why there is a narrow slit in the center of this Tropic of Cancer marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to the latitude of 23.5°, marking the boundary between tropical and subtropical regions. The most notable example in Taiwan is the difference in cultivated crops: tropical pineapples and soursop dominate the areas south of the Tropic, while tea and rice, which thrive in temperate climates, are primarily grown northward. During the summer solstice at noon, sunlight precisely aligns with the slit in the marker. At this moment, visitors standing near the tower can experience the fascinating phenomenon of being sunlit with no shadow cast! When visiting, apart from taking photos as a souvenir, you can also read the explanatory plaques to explore the wonders of the four seasons!
