Located in Shuangxi District, New Taipei City, Shuangxi Station was formerly known as “Ding-Shuangxi Station.” It has two island platforms; the original wooden station stood about 35 m above sea level. As coal mining flourished, passenger numbers grew daily and freight traffic increased, so the wooden building was replaced with a concrete station to meet demand. Shuangxi’s platforms and roadbed sit high above the surrounding ground; the stretch between here and Mudan Station climbs a steep 16 ‰ grade, nicknamed the “Mudan Slope” by railfans. The narrow strip from Shuangxi Station to the banks of the Mudan River, blessed with convenient transport, developed a streetscape distinct from the old quarter and is now the liveliest part of town. It is only about 100 m from the station to the river, where you can see the distinctive architectural style found in the mountain districts of northeast Taiwan.
