The Chiayi Experimental Woodworks Factory was originally a group of old prison dormitories that had been abandoned and left to decay for over a decade. In recent years, the city government has been promoting the "Reviving the Wooden City and Recreating a Historical Site" plan. Two of the four connected buildings, consisting of eight dormitories, have been transformed into an experimental woodworks factory. This is the first experimental woodworking factory in Chiayi City, serving as a base for experimentation, exchange, and nurturing of wood industry talent in the industry, government, and academic sectors. The goal is to showcase and promote the distinctive wooden city features of Chiayi. The Experimental Woodworks Factory is located in the center of the old Chiayi prison dormitory complex. Two sets of four connected Japanese-style dormitories have been redesigned to create two wooden construction workshops with unique characteristics. The north building preserves the original Japanese dormitory structure and appearance. Using structural design techniques, the traditional wooden structure has been transformed into a new wooden space. Modern wooden structure earthquake-resistant construction methods have been incorporated to enhance the support and earthquake resistance of traditional wooden buildings. The south building is based on a Japanese-style dormitory, with new wooden building materials and structural innovations. The large-span structure creates a spacious interior. The south building serves as a woodworking factory, while the north building will be used for research, teaching, and exhibitions. This allows the two buildings to showcase the fusion and dialogue between new and old wooden building construction techniques.
