Jinshan Old Street was once a commercial street during the Qing Dynasty, with a highly concentrated commercial activity. Products such as taro cakes, red-heart sweet potatoes, and egg rolls sold in the old street are well-known. Every time people come here, they always bring back a big bag of souvenirs. In addition, the street still preserves some of the characteristics of old stone houses. Long, connected buildings are scattered around, and there is even an old-style rice store over a hundred years old. Inside, there are historical relics such as square large wooden vats, scales, and century-old wooden doors. Next to it, traditional Chinese medicine shops display medicinal jars, preserving some of the remnants from the Qing Dynasty.
In the late years of the Yongzheng era of the Qing Dynasty, immigrants from Quanzhou established a street in Xiaozhonggu Village. The street is about one kilometer long, divided into the upper street and the lower street by Jinsheng Bridge. The street area starts from the Cihu Temple, and has existed for more than 300 years. The buildings are narrow in width and deep in depth, yet they still retain the architectural feature of "tingzijiao" (a covered walkway). It is currently the only remaining Qing Dynasty old street on the northern coast. It used to be the main distribution center for agricultural products and fish catches of the residents of Jinbao. Unfortunately, the old street buildings no longer look as they did before. Now, only a few traditional Fujian-style old houses with traditional features remain, as well as some parts of the Western-style buildings from the Japanese colonial period, such as the wooden old house from the late Qing Dynasty, which is the only one remaining behind the Cihu Temple, the red-brick Western-style building from the Japanese colonial period, and Qifengju, a 200-year-old building on Qingshui Road. Although the old buildings are no longer there, the old street market remains as prosperous as it was a hundred years ago. The Jinshan morning market still maintains the traditional way of a market day. In the market, you can buy local specialties such as red-heart sweet potatoes, Tiao Shi taro, water bamboo shoots, and red shell arrow bamboo shoots according to the season.
In recent years, Jinshan has been fully developing its tourism industry. In addition to traditional shops such as century-old rice stores, century-old Chinese medicine shops, and general stores, the old street has also added many new shops with unique characteristics, allowing the old street to display a new charm. The shops offer a full range of eating, drinking, and entertainment, making it a must-visit destination for tourists.
