2024-04-11
新北市淡水區中正路、重建街、清水街一帶
Walking out from the Daan Metro Station and turning right, the area around Zhongzheng Road and the extended Chongjian Street and Shuizheng Street is the famous Daan Old Street. The streets are lined with bustling shops. Many of them have a strong traditional atmosphere, such as rice stores, pasty shops, cloth shops, and general stores. Others sell trendy and fashionable clothes and toys, forming a unique commercial culture blending the old and the new. Daan Old Street is a place for treasure hunting, tasting delicious food, and visiting historical sites. It is a popular tourist destination that never gets boring. Daan Old Street includes Chongjian Street, Zhongzheng Road, and Shuizheng Street. Daan's development began around Fuyou Temple. Due to its convenient location, Chongjian Street could go south to the Daan Wharf in front of Fuyou Temple and north to the rural settlements of Daan. At that time, it was a street lined with shops, bustling and lively. The section of Chongjian Street near Fuyou Temple was initially where nine shops were built by people from Fujian, so it was called "Jiu Kan Street." Later, it was renamed Chongjian Street, which was closely related to Bali across the river. During the Jiaqing period, a flood and fire occurred in Bali, causing many people to lose their homes and migrate to this area to rebuild their homes, hence the name Chongjian Street. Located on the slope, Chongjian Street developed earlier, so there are still many old wooden and brick houses on both sides. At the end of the street, you can look out from a high place to the Daan River estuary. Later, due to commercial development, another street parallel to Chongjian Street was formed. This street mainly had rice stores and rice mills, so it was called "Mishi Zi" (now the northern section of Shuizheng Street). After the construction of Shuizhu Temple, the Mishi Street was renamed Shuizheng Street. During the street widening project from 1999 to 2000, Zhongzheng Road Old Street was paved with granite for the sidewalk. The residents also restored the front of their buildings in a traditional style, and the signs were neatly arranged, making it a beautiful street attracting tourists. At the entrance of the old street, there is an art landmark called "Yi Hang Huwei." In the middle of the street is a 16-meter-long ceramic art wall, created on the spot by artists from the Daan area during the 2004 Daan Art Festival. Going further, you can see the Dr. Mackay statue park, which commemorates Dr. Mackay, who had a profound impact on Daan. Along the way, there are also Shuizhu Temple, Fuyou Temple, Huwei Mackay Hospital, and Daan Church, which are historical sites. Besides exploring the old street, the specialty shops in the old street are also great places for shopping and enjoying delicious food.
