Taiwan Presbyterian Church Daotun Church

2017-07-05
The Daodaiting Church of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan was donated and built by Mr. Li Chunseng, an important figure in modern Taiwanese history. The church is located in the old downtown area of Daodaiting. According to the information, the main building style was modeled after churches built by Western missionaries in the Xiamen area of Fujian Province. The church was designed to spread the religious doctrine and has a refined and elegant style. The main structure is made of bricks, and the bricks used are high-quality "Daiei" red bricks from the early Taisho era. The construction quality is excellent, and the façade is decorated with artistic elements that combine both Chinese and Western characteristics. Because of the conservative customs at that time, the church had separate seating for men and women, and each entered through the left or right entrance. These unique features witness the development of Christianity in the Taipei area from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Although the architectural style of the historic building was modeled after Western churches, the stucco decoration on the façade still presents traditional Taiwanese patterns, combining both Chinese and Western styles. The building is solemn and approachable in scale, with its own unique characteristics. It is rare in modern Taiwanese architecture and has been highly evaluated by the heritage community, being designated as the 100th historic site in the city. The church also hides a "music bell" composed of 25 bells of various sizes. Every day at noon, the music bell plays at 12 o'clock, and seven different bell sounds take turns playing. If you happen to pass by, why not stop and listen for a while! After appreciating the beauty of the Daodaiting Church architecture, you can also visit the nearby Cisheng Temple and the street food alley!
