Jiufen town has a treasure known as the “Biodiversity Research Institute”. In order to promote ecological education in Taiwan, the institute has a Conservation Education Hall with static displays that provide a detailed introduction to Taiwan’s ecosystems, unique wildlife and plants, and environmental conservation issues, along with irregularly scheduled themed exhibitions. The Education Hall has guides who use simple, in-depth explanations to help visitors better understand conservation concepts. In addition, the hall provides ecological movie screenings, computer multimedia, conservation books, and data services, making it one of the most important conservation education sites in Taiwan. Outside the hall, there is a large ecological education area with a variety of plants and a butterfly garden. The ecological education area is designed to mimic a forest environment, attracting birds and insects to inhabit it. The area also features an aquatic plant ecological pond. When visitors get tired, they can sit in a pavilion and watch groups of mallards swimming in the pond, feeling as though they are in a jungle. Here, visitors can gain intellectual knowledge while also relaxing their tense minds and bodies. Furthermore, the Conservation Center also has a Wildlife Rescue Station, which has helped over 3,000 wild animals since its establishment in 2000. In the education area, there are currently birds of prey undergoing rehabilitation. Taking a stroll along the ecological trail provides an opportunity to get up close and personal with these precious and rare birds.
