Lin Yutang's Former Residence

2024-04-11
In 1966, Mr. Lin returned to Taiwan to settle permanently. This Western-style mansion was personally designed by him, integrating the Chinese courtyard house and Western architectural aesthetics, with blue-tiled rooves, white walls, arched gates, and corridors that blend modern perception with classical beauty. The location was specifically chosen in Yangmingshan, where the mountainous scenery resembles his ancestral hometown of Fujian, and where he could hear the familiar Hokkien dialect, bringing great comfort to him.

He once described this residence as "a garden within the house, a house within the garden, a courtyard within the house, a tree within the courtyard, a sky within the tree, and a moon in the sky—how delightful!" The balcony was Mr. Lin's favorite spot during his lifetime; after dinner, he often sat in a wicker chair beside the table, pipe in mouth, savoring the sunset sinking behind Guanyinshan. You can also visit here to experience such tranquility.
