Shiufen Old Street

2016-08-25
When people think of sky lanterns in Taiwan, they often picture Pingxi. However, the true origin of sky lanterns is Shifeng. Tracing the history of coal mining in Pingxi, the area of Shifeng was among the earliest and most developed towns. The main distinctive feature of Shifeng is its old town street that runs parallel to train tracks, creating a unique railway scenery that allows people to literally pass through under the train platform. This rare view has attracted numerous music video productions and the once-famous 1987 film "Dust in Love" directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, all of whom filmed scenes at Shifeng Station. Even today, visitors can still experience the vibrant atmosphere of Shifeng’s old town street. Although coal mining has ceased in the area, businesses such as restaurants and sky lantern souvenir shops continue to thrive. Because of the special name "Shifeng" (Ten Points or Ten Merits), local merchants ingeniously launched the "Ten Points of Happiness" postcard series, allowing travelers to send a letter to the future self filled with blessings. A constant stream of new ideas has brought innovative products such as Hakka patterned clothing and picture postcards, helping the Shifeng old town commercial area remain "teeming with business."
