Tianmu White House

2024-04-11
Tianmu White House was a dormitory for U.S. military personnel during the period of U.S. military assistance to Taiwan. When the Korean War broke out in the 1950s, the United States considered Taiwan as an important part of its Pacific defense line, and began to dispatch the Seventh Fleet to defend the Taiwan Strait and prevent the Chinese Communist Party from invading Taiwan. In order to accommodate the life of the U.S. military in Taiwan, the National Government built many high-class dormitories in the Shilin area, providing U.S. military personnel with a complete living environment. These dormitories had rain-splashed exterior walls, black roof tiles, fireplaces, exposed stone niches, and courtyards, combining American and Japanese architectural styles. Because of the original planning, the area of Tianmu along Zhongshan North Road Section 7 was a U.S. military housing area, and a large number of single-family wooden houses with spacious courtyards were also built, so the Tianmu area is full of a strong foreign atmosphere, import shops, and American-style pubs. The remaining historical site, No. 181, Lane 23, Section 7 of Zhongshan North Road, the "Tianmu White House" has historical and local memory significance. After more than 50 years, the Tianmu White House has undergone various changes with different people moving in and out, inevitably resulting in new constructions and renovations. It was even temporarily rented to a TV station for use as the home of the female lead in the idol drama "Love Magician" - the "Jungnam Barber Shop." This precious historical site definitely deserves a visit! The Tianmu White House is the first URS (Urban Renewal Site) to be preserved and designated as a city-level historical site initiated by the community. Therefore, the four characters "Tianmu White House" have an inexplicable influence on the local residents. Since 2012, the Taipei City Urban Renewal Office has continuously discussed the vision for the Tianmu area with residents. Through the filming of two community documentary films about the Tianmu White House, the establishment of the "Tianmu White House Preparation Committee," and the hosting of the "Tianmu White House Cultural Festival," various methods have been used to gather consensus among residents on the Tianmu White House, collect opinions from all sides, and reach a consensus to try to use the Tianmu White House as a base for urban renewal. In response to the community's memories and expectations for the revival of the White House, the "Chibang Art Foundation" officially took over and managed URS23 in July 2016. In addition to preserving and passing on the historical memory of the White House, it will strive to inspire the residents of Tianmu to imagine and communicate about the White House, and take "a common home for all Tianmu residents" as the core, allowing everyone to jointly build the new blueprint for the Tianmu White House.
