Tongxin Homeland

雲林縣虎尾鎮中山路2號對面
A living witness to the history of Huwei’s sugar industry, the Tongxin Homeland in Huwei, Yunlin, displays Taiwan Sugar Corporation’s No. 11 steam locomotive, a monument commemorating the introduction of South African cane variety 310, and vintage sugar-making tools for public viewing. Most of the trees inside are early Taiwanese camphor and tropical species transplanted from Southeast Asia, as if chronicling the rise and fall of Huwei’s sugar industry while softening Yunlin’s scorching sun. Originally a recreational site for sugar-factory employees and their families, Tongxin Homeland has become a weekend retreat for townspeople. In the compact park a small train still runs, and there stands the “Monument to the Introduction of South African Cane 310,” commemorating the importation of the 310 cane variety from South Africa in the early post-war period, underscoring the close ties between Tongxin Homeland and the development of the Huwei Sugar Refinery.
