The Siao‑ba stone pillars are located on the northern slope of the Wucheng plateau, and are two upright stone pillars raised by the dry land. These adjacent giant stone pillars have heights of 5.75 m and 3.99 m respectively. They appeared about 3,000 years ago and are the only prehistoric megalithic civilization relic in Taiwan; therefore, the Ministry of the Interior has designated them as national third‑level heritage sites. Without the aid of modern tools, how were these two huge stone pillars transported to the plateau, how were they erected, where did the stone pillars come from? These questions still have no answers today. The local area has many related myths and legends, including the Hunter’s Curse, the Amis Ancestor, the “wood‑board pun” and the transformation of wood into stone, all of which are interesting indigenous stories. From a scientific point of view, archaeologists have judged the Siao‑ba stone pillars to belong to the late Neolithic “Beinan Culture” based on artifacts found nearby. The Hualien–Taitung Valley Scenic Area Management Office built and organized a base of about 72 m in length and width around these two stone pillars, giving present‑day Ruichang Township its name of Siao‑ba stone pillars. The Siao‑ba stone pillars face the Red‑Leaf Valley. Because of the higher terrain, the view is wide and one can see the Xiu‑Gulang River valley and the mountains on the opposite side from afar. The scenery is beautiful. Under the reconstruction of the Hualien–Taitung Valley Scenic Area Management Office, this place has become a good spot for tourists to pause and rest.
