Sanjiedu is locally known as Hougangqian. Hougangqian connected Shezi, Jian Tan, and Dalongdong (Dalangben), and as the land was cultivated and villages were formed, the area gradually became an important place for the villages. In addition to connecting the towns and serving as a transportation hub, Sanjiedu was also a harbor where boats for living gathered. In addition to farming on land, raising ducks by the river, and digging for clams and fishing in the river, these were also important ways of making a living for the local residents. Later, due to river improvement projects, the function of the wharf gradually declined and disappeared. The history of Sanjiedu has witnessed the changes of the Danshui River, and it is a space with great historical significance.
Currently, only more than 10 sampans are quietly telling the past of the ferryhead. The craft is preserved by Ah Zheng, a member of a shipbuilding family from Jian Tan, Sanjiedu, Taipei. He learned shipbuilding at the age of 17, has made nearly 300 sampans and 100 dragon boats, and is one of the few remaining skilled craftsmen in Taiwan who makes traditional dragon boats. Through his efforts, the skills are inherited and the culture is spread, allowing the memory of the waterfront to continue, and the passion is once again warmed up in Sanjiedu.
