雲林縣水林鄉蕃薯厝102號
The only standing Mazu in all of Taiwan: Shunlian Temple in Shuilin, Fanshucuo enshrines Mazu as its principal deity, locally called “Fanshuliao Mazu.” The founding Mazu image stands upright, both arms raised toward the sky—an exceedingly rare posture among surviving Taiwanese statues. Every Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month the temple divines the Great Turtle, releases sky-lanterns, shoots fire-horses, and makes a three-day-and-night procession. Shunlian Temple stands in the Fanshucuo area of the township. The main hall honors the Heavenly Mother (the founding First-Mazu, flanked by the Great Generals Thousand-Li Eye and Favorable-Wind Ear), the Dark Heavenly Emperor, the Five Lords (Chi, Wu, Chu, Fan, and Wang), Koxinga (Cheng Cheng-kung), Wu and Liu Wang, Third Prince Li Nezha (Marshal of the Altar), and Tiger Lord (Marshal of the Lower Altar). To the east flows the Beigang River; in front meander the Fanshucuo and Diaosong drainage channels; behind runs the Jianshan channel—an exceptionally auspicious site. Photo: Hsueh Ying-ch’i.
