桃園市大溪區北橫公路,過慈湖,約台七線5公里處
Long before the Baiji Tunnel was built, the Daqi area connected to Fuxing Mountain regions such as Jiaobanshan and Barling primarily through the Baiji Trail (formerly known as the Shiguipit Ancient Path), which served as a crucial transportation route during the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial periods. In 1944, with the opening of the Baiji Tunnel and light railway, the Baiji Forest Trail ceased to function as a transportation hub. From 1949 onwards, when Cihu was designated a military control zone, the Baiji Trail gradually became shrouded in mystery. This seclusion lasted nearly half a century, allowing the area's ecological environment to avoid the damage of development. Visiting the Baiji Trail is not only a cultural and historical experience but also an opportunity to appreciate its rich natural landscapes. Spring and autumn offer chances to search for black-winged fireflies (*Macrolampis flexuosa*) and windowpane fireflies (*Luciola fenestra*), illuminating the forest trails at dusk with gentle glows. Winter visits may bring encounters with yellow-billed pittas (*Pitta ochracea*), bamboo partridges (*Bambusicola fytchii*), Taiwan blue magpies (*Urocissa caerulea*), and grey-winged chifchafs (*Ficedula hyalina*), offering delightful surprises. The path is also home to diverse plant species, with the most famous being the oil桐 (*Chionanthus reticulatus*), whose flowers bloom in May like a "snowstorm," creating a romantic atmosphere. Other native trees include azaleas, palm trees (*Chrysaora quinquecirrha*?), kidney ferns, Bornean royal ferns (*Cyathea latifrons*?), and *Eucalyptus robusta*. Vivid butterflies like the black swallowtail (*Papilio machaon*), snake-eyed hawkmoths (*Prochoerodes batesii*?), crimson banded swallowtails (*Papilio rumanzovia*?), and red-spotted purple butterflies (*Agdistis hypochondriana*?) flit through the foliage. The 2.8-kilometer Baiji Forest Trail is entirely paved with smooth asphalt suitable for leisurely walking; unlike traditional ancient paths, it has no steep gradients, making it a beginner-friendly trail accessible to all ages and ideal for family outings. Along the route, enjoy the tranquility of the primal forest, breathe in plant-derived phytoncides and negative ions to relax the mind and body, and savor the panoramic vistas of Daqi from the hilltop. A visit to this trail is truly unforgettable. It also connects nearby attractions like the Dajiucong Ancient Path and Xizhou Park.
