Hengshan Terraced Fields lie along the middle reaches of the Daken River and form Sanzhi’s most famous terraced landscape. Head from Sanzhi town toward Hengshan and a pastoral panorama immediately unfolds: tier after tier of paddies climb the slopes, while roads and the river weave among them. The stacked landforms create geometric beauty—whether the stark charm of fallow earth or the jade-green expanse of water-bamboo season, travelers can watch the terraces shift with every season.
Hengshan, once called Hengshan Kan, is a hilly district with pronounced elevation changes. Early Sanzhi, hemmed in by mountains and sea, had little flat land, so settlers carved rice terraces into the slopes, giving rise to the renowned landscape. Today the terraces no longer grow rice; they are home to water bamboo. From September to November the harvest ripens—visit then to see emerald fields rippling in the autumn breeze, pick fresh shoots, and taste water-bamboo specialties, savoring a leisurely farm holiday.
