Yuli Xiaotian Temple is the first temple established in Hualien County. Built in the first year of the Guangxu era in the Qing dynasty (1875), it has a history of over 130 years. In 1951 (Minguo Year 40), due to damage caused by an earthquake, it was rebuilt into its current form. General Guangliang Wu, the supreme commander of the Zong Road Flying Tiger Army in the Qing dynasty, led troops through the Qitongguan ancient trail to reach Puzige (ancient name of Yuli), where an epidemic occurred. To ease the soldiers' anxiety, he specially built Xiaotian Temple and personally inscribed the plaque "Guarantor of the Rear Mountains." It has long been recognized as the temple's treasure, making the Yuli Xiaotian Temple even more a core of faith for the entire township. The temple mainly venerates Emperor Guan, the deity Wu Guangliang prayed to for blessings at that time. The two most important annual celebrations are the Emperor Guan's birthday on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month and the Ghost Festival (Chung Yeung Festival) on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. Visiting Xiaotian Temple reveals a traditional center of worship and the core of Yuli's local life. Since the eastern region was developed later, the history of Han Chinese religious centers is not long, making rare opportunities to witness such an old temple over a hundred years old particularly special; visitors who come here will surely experience the unique charm of temples in eastern Taiwan.
