"Donggang Catholic Church" was founded in 1955 by Fr. Lin Deming, a priest of the Dominican Province of Teh-tor. Its original site is now the Early Childhood Education Building of Xinji Junior High School. In 1960 it moved to Zhongshan Road. The church is a strikingly modern structure; its sloped roof recalls the tents that sheltered the faithful during the Exodus, while the peak pointing skyward symbolizes the path to heaven. All construction funds came from overseas Dominican communities, not from Taiwan. In the church’s early days, language differences led priests to preach in both Mandarin and Taiwanese—an interesting feature that set its evangelization apart from other places. The parish also runs Xinji Junior High School, Holy Family Kindergarten, and Xiaohai Nursing Home, serving the people of Donggang. After nearly half a century, Donggang Catholic Church has become a new landmark of the town.
